PM should give marching orders to Modi: Congress

Stepping up its offensive, the Congress party on Wednesday asked Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee to give Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi 'marching orders' following his indictment by the National Human Rights Commission for failing to restore confidence of the people in his government.

"In the trial conducted by the NHRC, Modi stands squarely condemned... we do not want Vajpayee who is visiting the state tomorrow (Thursday) to fail in his trial. We expect the prime minister to give Modi marching orders," party spokesman S Jaipal Reddy said.

He said that the NHRC report is 'tantamount to indictment' of the Gujarat government.

"Now the moral trial of Modi has ended. This is where the trial of prime minister begins since he is scheduled to visit Gujarat tomorrow (Thursday) itself. There are high expectations from the visit of Vajpayee to the troubled state," he said.
