The Supreme Court on Wednesday granted bail to diamond-merchant and film producer Bharat Shah, who was arrested on January 8 last year under Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) for his alleged links with the underworld.
Allowing Shah's appeal against Bombay high court order refusing him bail, a bench comprising Justice M B Shah and Justice B P Singh asked him to furnish a bail-bond of Rs 100,000 and two sureties of the like amount.
The court also directed Shah to surrender his mobile phone to investigating agencies. His passport, which he has surrendered before the trial court, will also not be released.
Ordering expeditious trial in the case, the bench said the trial court would proceed with the matter uninfluenced by any order passed previously by the high court and this order of the Supreme Court.
