Over 50 Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam rebels attacked a police post in eastern Sri Lanka on Thursday, killing 11 policemen and injuring 16 others, officials said.
Troops were rushed in to repulse the assault near Muttur in Trincomalee district, and the heavy exchange of fire lasted over an hour, military spokesman, Brig Sanath Karunaratne said.
Eleven police personnel were killed in the attack, Karunaratne said, adding the injured have been taken in boats across the Muttur lagoon for treatment in a hospital in Trincomalee town.
Casualty figures among the LTTE assailants were not immediately available, he said.
The rebels have been resorting to sudden attacks in the east for the last couple of months and have also been sending suicide boats to target Sri Lankan vessels carrying troops and supplies to the northern Jaffna peninsula.
