Gulshan case: Chunky Pandey changes statement

A Correspondent in Bombay

Film star Chunky Pandey, who had been summoned along with Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan as a prosecution witness before a Bombay Sessions Court on Thursday, dramatically changed his earlier statement.

Pandey and Salman in their earlier statement to the police had said they attended the inauguration of smuggler Vicky Goswami's hotel in Dubai on June 12, 1997 and participated in a show organised by music directors Nadeem and Shravan.

Salman Khan (in dark glasses) arriving at the courtThey also said they had overheard Gulshan Kumar's name being mentioned in a lunch party the next day, which was attended by Dawood Ibrahim, Abu Salem and Nadeem.

Shahrukh Khan, however, had said that he did not attend the lunch party.

On Thursday, answering public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam, Pandey said he did not recall hearing music composer Nadeem Saifee speak about Gulshan Kumar at a party in Dubai.

He, however, said he had participated in a musical programme in the Gulf, where he admitted to meeting another accused Vicky Goswami.

Besides, he denied his statement recorded by the Bombay police in September 1997 was shown to him.

Immediately after Pandey had changed his statement, the prosecution lawyer requested the judge to discharge the other prosecution witnesses, Salman and Shah Rukh, saying he did not expect anything new from the duo.

Judge Tahiliyani has scheduled the next hearing of the case on November 9, the last working day before the court goes on vacation for Diwali.
