Benazir plans to visit India

The Pakistan People's Party Friday announced that its chief and former prime minister Benazir Bhutto planned to visit New Delhi later this year to promote peace efforts in the region, even as India invited military ruler Pervez Musharraf for talks.

A statement issued by PPP on her behalf said Bhutto welcomed Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's invitation to Musharraf for talks.

Stating that the PPP supported the process of dialogue between the two countries, Bhutto, however, said she had little hopes of any breakthrough. "General Musharraf is a military dictator. History proved that dictators go to war and democrats build peace."

"Now that the general has announced plans to visit India, Bhutto will also visit New Delhi sometime this year," the statement said.

Bhutto had planned to visit New Delhi in May 1999, but the trip was postponed due to the Kargil conflict.
