Mukhtar Ahmad in Srinagar

Two soldiers were killed and eight others wounded after a militant on a suicide mission forced his way into a Rashtriya Rifles camp at Village Shrikhwaja near Mandi in Poonch district of Jammu region.

Police sources said the militant attacked the camp with grenades and an assault rifle and forced his way in.

He killed two soldiers in the surprise attack and injured six others before being gunned down.

On Sunday, militants had entered an army camp at Baramulla, killing four soldiers, including a junior commissioned officer, while six others were wounded.

Meanwhile, Vice Chief of Army Staff Lt Gen Vijay Oberoi, reviewed the overall situation in the state with senior army officers of the northern command at Udhampur during a two-day visit to Jammu and Kashmir.

According to a defence spokesman, he was presented a detailed briefing and assessment of the operational situation along the Line of Control and in the state after implementation of non-initiation of combat operations.

The spokesman said Oberoi had detailed discussion with the GOC-in-C northern command Lt Gen R K Nanavatty on "various other issues of contemporary operational significance and the strategy to effectively deal with the current situation".
