Congress joins NDA in condemning
Karunanidhi arrest

Tara Shankar Sahay in New Delhi

The Congress, AIADMK's ally during the May assembly election, on Saturday joined constituents of the National Democratic Alliance in condemning the manner in which the arrest of former Tamil Nadu chief minister M Karunanidhi was handled.

Senior Congress leader Ambika Soni deplored the manner in which Karunanidhi had been arrested and said, "There is no space for the politics of vengeance in the country's political set-up."

Meanwhile, NDA constituents mounted pressure on Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee to restrain AIADMK supremo and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalitha from 'unleashing a reign of terror on political opponents'.

An emergency meeting of NDA constituents had been convened for 1830 hours on Saturday to take stock of the political situation in Tamil Nadu.

A spokesman of the Prime Minister's Office told rediff.com that angry protests had reached Vajpayee from the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam headquarters in Madras, where party workers were clamouring for the Jayalalitha government's immediate dismissal.

"This is politics of revenge," said senior BJP leader J P Mathur.

Telugu Desam Party leader K Yerran Naidu said, "We are watching the situation. I am sure the prime minister will take appropriate measures."

PTI adds:
The Tamil Maanila Congress, an ally of the AIADMK, on Saturday condemned the behaviour of the police while it arrested former Tamil Nadu chief minister M Karunanidhi on a corruption charge.

In a statement in Madras, TMC president G K Moopanar said the manner in which the police effected the arrest was 'wrong and condemnable'.
