No reason was cited for my arrest: Baalu

Union Minister for Environment and Forests T R Baalu on Saturday said that Madras police arrested him 'without assigning any reason'.

"In spite of identifying myself as an Union minister, they did not care to produce an arrest warrant and they ill-treated and assaulted me," Baalu said.

Stating that he was arrested at the residence of Union Commerce Minister Murasoli Maran, Baalu said he was manhandled by the police officers before being dragged into a police vehicle.

He said he needed medical treatment for pain in his legs and hip.

However, the police said that Baalu was arrested for 'obstructing a public servant from discharging his duties'.

They added that the court has remanded Baalu to judicial custody till July 13, 2001.
