Personal agenda prevailed over
rule of the law: Arun Jaitley

Arun Jaitley, Union Law Minister

I am trying to collect all the details of this case but the initial impression appears to be that personal agenda is being given preference over the rule of the law.

The manner in which a senior Union Cabinet minister and state leaders were treated by the state police is extremely disturbing.

Karunanidhi is not only a state leader but a senior leader of the country. After seeing the visual images of the manner of his arrest, it appears to be a serious onslaught on human rights.

I would like to know, why did the police go to Maran's home? He has got nothing to do with the criminal case (the Madras flyover scam).

I was informed by Union Environment Minister T R Balu over the telephone that he was arrested after he questioned the police on why they had come to Maran's house.

The conduct of the state police is very disturbing.

In a normal corruption case, a First Information Report is filed, the case if investigated, a chargesheet is made and a court decides whether to give bail to the accused or not.

And then on rejection of the bail application, an accused is arrested.

This is what happened in all the cases, including that of Laloo Prasad Yadav and others.

But, in this case, a First Information Report was filed at 2000 hours, investigation was completed in no time and by 0200 hours the next day senior leaders were arrested.

These are those leaders who are not likely to abscond.

I would also like to add that the treatment meted out to mediapersons in the last two days is a matter of deep concern to all of those who care for democracy.
