Britain applauds India's peace initiative

Britain on Friday applauded India for taking the initiative to invite Pakistani military ruler Gen Pervez Musharraf for talks and hoped the summit meeting would be a 'significant positive' development.

"I applaud India's initiative, and Pakistan's constructive response," British Foreign Secretary Robin Cook said in a statement.

Welcoming Musharraf's acceptance of Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's invitation for the dialogue, Cook said, "Such a meeting will be a significant positive development in India-Pakistan relations, and will serve to build confidence on both sides."
