Police quiz Phoolan's husband,
SP leaders bunk chautha

Umed Singh, husband of Phoolan Devi, was on Sunday questioned by the police in connection with the dacoit-turned-MP's murder last Wednesday in the capital's high security zone.

Sleuths of the Delhi police's Crime Branch quizzed Singh for an hour at the slain MP's Ashoka Road residence, police sources said.

While Singh claimed that he was questioned only about people visiting the house, the sources said he was asked about Sher Singh alias Pankaj, the prime accused in the case, and Uma Kashyap, a political activist, and her husband, who are being questioned by the police.

"They only asked me about people visiting our home. They were very particular as to who the people were," Singh said.

This was the first time that Umed Singh, who was reportedly having a strained relationship with Phoolan, was questioned. He was busy with her cremation and other rites.

Meanwhile, the chautha (fourth day) ceremony of Phoolan Devi was organised at her residence on Sunday.

Senior Samajwadi Party leaders were conspicuous by their absence at the function, which was attended by husband Umed Singh, relatives and some party workers.
