UP bandh to protest Phoolan killing partially successful

Shops and business establishments were closed in most places in Uttar Pradesh in response to Samajwadi Party's dusk-to-dawn statewide bandh on Thursday to protest the killing of Phoolan Devi.

Party workers took out processions and staged dharna at various places in the state, official reports said.

A complete bandh was observed in Mirzapur, which Phoolan Devi represented in Lok Sabha.

Bandh supporters indulged in stone-pelting and damaged a few vehicles, reports said.

About 125 SP party workers courted arrest in Kanpur where bandh supporters came out on the streets and raised slogans demanding the arrest of Phoolan's killers.

Police and paramilitary forces were deployed at sensitive places, officials said.
