Police and security forces had set up barricades, intensified patrolling and had employed helicopters in the Manipur Valley following tension over Thursday night's killing of a woman protestor.
On Thursday night, a woman was killed and over 100 others injured when police burst teargas shells to disperse more than 100,000 women who staged a massive torchlight rally across the Valley, defying curfew.
With the anti-ceasefire agitation gaining momentum, students in Imphal defied prohibitory orders and poured into the streets even as security personnel blocked them near the Raj Bhavan.
The students who had gathered at Nityaipat Chuthek, marched in a procession but were prevented by the police and security forces, official said.
Widespread sit-ins were reported from several parts of Manipur, including Nambol, Moriang, Bishnupur, Thoubal and Kakching. However, no untoward incidents were reported, sources said.
Choppers kept vigil while police and para-military forces intensified security measures in the Valley during the 12-hour relaxation of curfew from 0500 hours (IST), they said.
