Maran discharged from hospital

Union Industry and Commerce Minister Murasoli Maran, admitted to the Apollo Hospital in Madras after he suffered injuries in the melee following the arrest of DMK chief M Karunanidhi, was discharged on Wednesday, hospital sources said.

Maran was arrested on Saturday evening by the police at the hospital on charges of obstructing police officials and was later remanded to judicial custody.

A metropolitan magistrate ordered his release on Monday on the basis of a petition filed by police that his detention was no longer necessary as preliminary investigation into the case had been completed.

But Maran refused to come out of custody, demanding that the cases against him be dropped, which the Tamil Nadu government did on Tuesday.

On Tuesday night, his colleague T R Baalu, who had been let off from the central prison at Vellore, had called on him. Baalu was also arrested on charges of obstructing policemen.
