Cop held in Orissa for protecting flesh trade ring

Imran Khan in Bhubaneswar

A senior police official in Orissa's Malkangiri district was arrested on Wednesday for providing protection to a flesh trade ring.

"The officer in charge of Motu police station, Gopal Chandra Shety, has been arrested for his involvement in a flesh trade racket," Superintendent of Police Asheet Panigrahi said.

Three others, including two women, have also been arrested in this connection.

A crack team of Orissa police raided a house in a remote part of Malkangiri district after getting information about Shety's involvement in flesh trade. Apart from Shety, the main pimp Parvati Sarkar and two others were also picked up from the house.

Panigrahi said several influential people, including rich businessmen and contractors patronised the prostitution ring in Malkangiri run by Sarkar.
