Karunanidhi's health a worry,
says daughter

George Iype in Madras

"My father is very weak and tired. He is not being given proper medical attention," Kanimozhi, daughter of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam president and former Tamil Nadu chief minister M Karunanidhi, complained after meeting the jailed septuagenarian.

Kanimozhi, who along with her mother Dayalu Ammal, sister Selvi and husband Aravindan visited Karunanidhi in the Central Jail in Madras on Monday, told rediff.com that her father was in 'a normal 12 ft by 12 ft cell, with no facilities'.

This was the first time members of his family were allowed to meet the jailed political leader, following his arrest in the pre-dawn hours of Saturday June 30.

Kanimozhi had handed over to her father a book he was half-way through when he was arrested.

"I am worried and unhappy about the medical attention that my father is getting," Kanimozhi said after the meeting. "I am concerned about his high blood pressure level."

"The doctors attending him are clueless about his medical condition. I am not at all confident that the medicines the doctors are giving him will be of any use. My father, however, seems very alert, and he talked to us at length," she said.

Describing Karunanidhi's physical condition, she said his legs were swollen and it rendered him incapable of walking. Karunanidhi was brought out in a wheelchair to meet the visitors, Kanimozhi said.

"The main problem is that he is taking prison food," she said, pointing out that Karunanidhi had been prescribed a specialised diet by his physicians owing to various health problems.
