DMK seeks Vajpayee's intervention

Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam on Monday sought Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's immediate intervention in the 'serious situation' prevailing in Tamil Nadu following the arrest of former chief minister M Karunanidhi.

DMK is a key constituent of the ruling National Democratic Alliance coalition at the Centre.

"The arrest of more than 50,000 people has resulted in overcrowding in all the jails and they are suffering from lack of food, water, toilet facilities and medical aid", DMK General Secretary K Anbazhagan said in a letter to Vajpayee.

Anbazhagan claimed that the bandh called by NDA parties was a 'total success' in Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry.
