Buddhadev elected to CPI-M politburo

Imran Khan in Bhubaneswar

West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadev Bhattacharya was elected to the politburo of the Communist Party of India-Marxist by the party's central committee, whose three-day long meeting ended in Bhubaneswar on Monday.

Announcing this, party general secretary Harkishan Singh Surjeet said Bhattacharya was the only inclusion.

"As all chief ministers of CPI-M ruled states are included in the politburo, his inclusion was due," he said.

Former West Bengal chief minister, Joyti Basu is also a politburo member.

With Bhattacharya's inclusion, the number of politburo members goes up to 18.

Bhattacharya was a central committee member earlier.

The CPI-M met in Bhubaneswar last Friday followed by the central committee meeting in which the political and economic situation in the country and electoral strategy for the forthcoming assembly elections in five states including the Left Front-ruled West Bengal and Kerala were discussed.
