Security tightened following airport attack, toll rises to 12

Security around vital installations has been tightened in Jammu and Kashmir in the wake of Tuesday's abortive attempt by Pakistan-based Lashker-e-Tayiba militants to storm the high-security Srinagar airport, a top police official said.

The toll in Tuesday's encounter, meanwhile, has risen to 12 with an injured Central Reserve Police Force constable succumbing to injuries at the Army Base Hospital.

The security around the civil secretariat, other government buildings, Doordarshan and All India Radio offices has been beefed up, Inspector General of Police A K Bhan said.

Commenting on Tuesday's incident, Bhan said police had prior information of the militants' plan to attack Srinagar airport and had taken adequate precautions.

"We had information that militants were planning a strike at the airport," he said, adding he had visited the airport a day before the incident and chalked out a strategy with senior CRPF officers which proved successful.

Meanwhile, police and paramilitary forces have intensified patrolling and special nakas have been set up all across the town.
