Plans to disrupt R-Day
functions foiled: PTI

The militants belonging to the pro-Pakistan Hizbul Mujahideen and Lashkar-e-Tayiba outfits were killed in encounters in Pulwama and Baramulla districts, while four top commanders of the Jamiat-ul-Mujahideen, including its self-styled chief commander, were arrested following operations by police and security forces, Inspector General of Police A K Bhan said.

He said the operations to neutralise the militant groups had become essential in view of reports that the militants had chalked out plans to disrupt Republic Day functions in Srinagar, Baramulla and Pulwama districts.

"The militants had planned to carryout attacks on soft targets and disrupt Republic Day functions to derail the peace process set in motion by Prime Minister A B Vajpayee last year," Bhan said.

The group had targeted some political leaders and senior officers, he said, adding it was in touch with the Pakistan-based LeT outfit in giving shape to its plans.

He said the documents recovered from the slain militants, who included a foreign mercenary, clearly indicated their plans to attack the venue of January 26 at Pulwama using rockets.
