Orissa hooch tragedy rises to 25

The death toll in Orissa's hooch tragedy has gone up to 25, with four more deaths being reported in Puri and Bhubaneswar on Friday night and Saturday morning, a senior government official stated.

The toll is likely to rise with many people with symptoms of vomiting and stomach pain flocking to hospitals in Puri and Bhubaneswar.

About 50 people were hospitalised on Friday and Saturday in Bhubaneswar and Puri.

A doctor at Capital hospital admitted that many more people were being admitted.

Ruling party Biju Janata Dal chief whip Pradip Maharathy claimed on Saturday that the death toll may cross 100.

Nine persons died after consuming spurious liquor in the capital city of Bhubaneswar alone, while the Puri death toll which was 12 on Friday morning touched 16 by Saturday.

Unofficially, the death toll has crossed the 25 figure mark till Saturday morning.

"We have information that three more persons died in Puri and Bhubaneswar on Saturday morning," said Bipin Das, a senior Congress leader.

The state government has ordered an administrative probe into the hooch tragedy. Revenue Divisional Commissioner, central zone, Ramesh Chandra has been asked by the government to submit a probe report immediately.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has suspended nine excise department staff.
