One protestor killed in police firing

Mukhtar Ahmad in Srinagar

One person was killed when the police opened fire in Maisuma to disperse demonstrators who were protesting against the Haigam killings.

Police sources said the mobs were pelting stones on the cops, forcing them to retaliate. The police opened fire after tear-gassing and baton charge, resulting in serious injuries to Jawed Ahmed Nath. He was immediately rushed to hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

Reports from Baramulla and Pattan said hundreds of people came out on the streets to protest against Thursday's Haigam killings.

Earlier, curfew was imposed in Srinagar's Civil Line area on Friday morning following protest demonstrations against the Haigam killings.

Police jeeps fitted with public announcement system were asking the people to return to their homes in the city centre and Maisuma locality, even as youths came out on the streets pelting stones on police and passing vehicles amid pro-freedom slogans.

The police fired warning shots and teargas shells to chase away the protestors who, however, were still regrouping in the area.

Police and paramilitary forces have been deployed in strength in the Civil Line area to enforce curfew.

Meanwhile, a complete strike called by the All Parties Hurriyat Conference against the Haigam killings crippled normal life in the entire Valley on Friday. Shops and business establishments in Srinagar are closed and traffic is completely off the roads.

A senior police officer, while talking to rediff.com from Baramulla, confirmed that a case or murder has been registered against 29 Rashtriya Rifles in police station Sopore. The state government has already ordered a judicial probe into Thursday's incident.
