The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam on Wednesday declared a month-long unilateral ceasefire as a "goodwill measure" to facilitate peace initiatives in Sri Lanka.
The ceasefire will come into effect on the Christmas eve.
LTTE leader V Prabhakaran "has issued orders to all units and combat formations of the Tamil liberation army to cease all hostile military actions against the Sri Lankan armed forces from midnight December 24 till midnight January 24, 2002," a statement from LTTE headquarters said.
"We are confident that the new government will utilise this space of peace to implement goodwill measures to create congenial conditions of normalcy in the Tamil homeland," it said.
The LTTE announcement is on the lines of a Christmas-eve ceasefire announced last year by the group.
