Phoolan's hubby on a fast for CBI probe

Basharat Peer in New Delhi

Phoolan Devi's husband Umed Singh has sat on protest fast on Monday outside Rajghat demanding a Central Bureau of Investigation probe into the 'deep political conspiracy' behind Phoolan's murder on July 25.

"The police version of the murder as a revenge for the Behmai killings cannot be believed by anyone in this country. The truth is being suppressed and there is a major political conspiracy behind her murder. There should be a CBI probe to unravel the truth," Umed Singh told rediff.com.

Singh said he believed that it was some 'big fish' who had ordered the killing, with Rana only carrying out the orders.

"I will not move from this place till the government gives me an assurance of a CBI probe to find out Phoolan's real killers," Umed Singh said.

But police sources said that he would not be allowed to sit there beyond 5.00 pm (IST), and he might even be arrested if he doesn't move out by the stipulated time.

"It doesn't matter to me, if they arrest me. Let them put me in a jail. I will continue to be on fast there also and keep protesting till a CBI probe is ordered," Singh said.

Soon after Phoolan's murder there was a feud between Umed Singh and Phoolan's sisters over her property and political legacy.

Munni Devi and her mother had accused Umed Singh, who has another wife, of having a hand in the murder.

"Had I had anything to do with her murder, would I be protesting here for a CBI probe into her murder," Umed Singh reasoned.
