120 tribal students flee school in Orissa

Imran Khan in Bhubaneswar

About 120 tribal students in Orissa have fled from a residential school and are hiding in a nearby forest for the last four days, senior officials in Phulbani district said on Monday.

Sources said that before leaving the school, the students put up a poster at the main gate detailing their 12-point charter of demands. They also wrote that they would return to the school only if the authorities promised to fulfill all their demands.

Worried parents of the students have lodged a complaint at the Belghar police station. They have alleged that the school is making no attempts to bring their children back.

The students have alleged that their principal and physical education teacher remain absent for at least 20 days in a month. They have also charged the school with not providing them books.

The Phulbani district superintendent of police said his officers are looking into the matter.
