The Phoolan Devi murder case got more curious on Friday with police launching a manhunt for two more associates of prime accused Sher Singh Rana alias Pankaj.
The police have launched a hunt to track down Pankaj Kalra alias Vicky who had been Rana's accomplice in his previous crimes.
Though police are confident that only four persons participated in the crime, they face the challenge of establishing their identities.
Confusion regarding the identities was caused after revelations by Uttaranchal Police that Rana and Ravinder were in a Haridwar jail till July 26 in an excise case. While it has now been established that Rana was not in jail on July 25, the matter regarding Ravinder is yet to be confirmed because of a possibility of his being confused with Vicky, police sources said.
Efforts are on to locate Vicky.
In Dehradun, Uttaranchal Director General of Police A K Saran said preliminary investigations have belied claims that Rana was in jail on July 25 and suggested that someone else, 'most probably' an employee in Rana's liquor shop in Roorkee, Shravan, was impersonating him.
Police team has been sent to Shravan's native state Bihar and searches were on in Uttaranchal also to track him down, he said.
