Phoolan's mother, sister say
Umed threatened to kill them

Basharat Peer in New Delhi

Phoolan Devi's sister Ramkali and mother Mula Devi on Thursday alleged that Umed Singh Kashyap, the slain MP's husband, is trying to stop them from meeting the media and has threatened to kill them.

On Wednesday, Ramkali had accused Umed Singh of being a party to the conspiracy to kill her sister.

Umed Singh, however, is not willing to comment on the allegations. "I do not even want to comment. Let them say what they want," he told rediff.com

Policemen posted outside his Ashoka Road residence admit that they have been instructed to not let mediapersons meet Phoolan's mother and sister, who occupy a part of the sprawling bungalow.

Phoolan's mother and sister maintain that Umed Singh married Phoolan only for her property.

Umed Singh on his part admits there were problems between him and Phoolan. "See, there are problems in every household. We had come to the point of filing for divorce by mutual consent," he said.

Asked about the incident when he allegedly burnt Phoolan's nephew's hand and she filed a case against him at the Hauz Khas police station, he said it was a "minor altercation."

He denied vehemently the allegation that he had siphoned off Rs 2.5 million from the royalties received from Bandit Queen, a film based on Phoolan's life as a dacoit, and given the money to his first wife.

"It is false. I have divorced my first wife, but I do take care of my children. That is my dharma," a visibly upset Umed Singh said.
