Dara Singh's captor suspended

Imran Khan in Bhubaneswar

Police Inspector Balram Sagar, the captor of Dara Singh, has been suspended following the mysterious death of a youth, who he had taken into custody, according to Bargarh SP Jaswinder Singh.

Dara Singh is the main accused in the killing of Australian missionary Graham Stuart Staines and his two minor sons.

According to police sources, Sagar, officer in-charge of Barpali police station, a sub-inspector and an assistant sub-inspector were suspended two days back in the case relating to the death of the youth of Barpali town in Bargarh district.

Sagar came into the limelight following the arrest of Dara Singh last year in the forests near Thakurmunda on the Keonjhar-Mayurbhanj border. Sagar was part of a special police party led by Mayurbhanj Superintendent of Police Y B Khurania, which arrested Dara Singh.

Sagar played an important role in traping Dara Singh into buying a gun in the forest before his arrest. Sagar had received prize money for arresting Dara Singh.

Sagar was transferred to Barpali police station in Bargarh district after the arrest of Dara Singh.

Sagar kept motor mechanic, Chittaranjan Meher, in custody for two days in February this year. After his release, Meher was found hanging from a tree.

The local police disposed of the body, on the plea that it was 'unidentified' and could not be kept for long, since the town did not have the required facilities.

When Meher's wife insisted that Sagar and other police officers show her photographs of the body, they allegedly refused.
