Bangladeshi forces vacate Pyrdiwah

After a three-day occupation, the Bangladesh Rifles on Thursday vacated Pyrdiwah village in the East Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya, Border Security Force Director General Gurbachan Jagat said in New Delhi.

The BDR and other Bangladeshi forces have vacated the area of Pyrdiwah, Jagat told the Press Trust of India. "This was the result of the flag meeting between the BSF and the BDR held earlier in the day," he said.

Stating that tension had reduced and firing on the border had ceased, Jagat said the Bangladeshi authorities would hand over by Friday the bodies of 15 BSF men killed in Wednesday's firing.

Two injured BSF personnel are also in their captivity and are being treated, he added.

The Union home ministry, quoting reports from forward BSF outposts, had on Wednesday night said that 16 BSF personnel and two BDR men had been killed when over 1,000 soldiers from the BDR and the Bangladeshi Army overran Boraibari village in Assam, driving about 1,000 villagers out of their homes.

The Bangladeshi side had asked the BSF to furnish proof that the land they had occupied was part of India.

Terming the Bangladeshi action 'unprovoked', Jagat said there was 'no dispute' over the territory and traditionally Indians and Bangladeshis have lived in enclaves along the border.

Two joint working groups are already working to resolve the border issues, he said.
