M I Khan in Bhubaneswar

The Puri police rescued Orissa Engineering College founder director Kamini Kanta Patnaik at 2100 hours IST on Friday, from the house of a former OEC employee, from a village near Pipli, about 15 km from Bhubaneswar.

Police sources said that they, acting on a tip-off, raided the house of Sarat Biswal at Adangapada and rescued Patnaik. Biswal has been arrested.

Biswal had demanded a ransom of Rs 5 million, police sources said.

Biswal admitted that he kidnapped Patnaik as he had been dismissed from his job.

Biswal was with the OEC till February 2000. He was charged with forging documents relating to admissions for three students.

Khurda police superintendent of police Arun Kumar Sarangi told rediff.com that police had a vital clue leading to the arrest by tracking down a mobile telephone of Biswal's father. Patnaik had called his family from the mobile telephone after being kidnapped.

The police had sealed all exit points in Bhubaneswar and searched all vehicles leaving the city till Friday evening.
