Faced with a shortage of residential space for ministers and legislators, the Orissa government evicted 10 former legislators and a former minister from quarters illegally occupied by them at the MLAs' colony recently.

Early this week, government quarters allegedly unauthorisedly occupied by former legislator Anantram Majhi and the family of the late Gangadhar Majhi were taken into possession with police help.

The former legislators evicted from the quarters belong to the Congress and the ruling Biju Janata Dal.

State government sources said that as part of the eviction drive, more government quarters illegally occupied by political leaders, government officials and journalists will be vacated soon.

Those were evicted from the government quarters were living after expiry of their terms as legislators, sources said.

A top official of the general administration department told rediff.com that 40 more illegally occupied government quarters are to be taken into possession.

The sources said that four former legislators vacated their quarters, responding to eviction notices. Interestingly, a saloon was operating in the garage of one of the quarters.

Journalists are occupying six quarters illegally in Bhubaneswar, the sources said. All are not working journalists and do not have government accreditation, the sources added.
