Remains of SIA crash victims brought to Hyderabad

Syed Amin Jafri in Hyderabad

The bodies of three Indian passengers and urns containing the ashes of five others, who died in the Singapore Airlines plane crash at Taipei on October 31, were brought to Hyderabad on Tuesday morning from the Taiwanese capital via Madras.

Heart-rending scenes were witnessed at the Hyderabad airport when grieving relatives received the bodies and urns of their dear ones who were killed when the ill-fated Singapore Airlines plane crashed shortly after take-off last Tuesday.

Special Officer (Protocol) G Sadanand, who oversaw the arrangements at the Hyderabad airport, told rediff.com that the bodies of software engineer Volam Janardhan (31), his wife Vuppala Neelima (25) and their nine-month-old son Akash were sent to their native village Kesamudram in Warangal district. The families of Janardhan and Neelima accompanied the bodies.

The urns containing the ashes of four members of the Kommera family - software engineer Kommera Srinivas (36), his wife dental surgeon Kommera Sangeeta (32) and their two children Sneha (5) and Sahil (one) - were handed over to their next of kin.

The urns were taken to the family's residence at Santoshnagar in the city.

The ashes of another victim, Marellapudi Suryanarayana, were also handed over to his relatives.

Sadanand said that the bodies of three other victims - Mohammed Moinuddin Khan (79), his wife Noorjahan Begum (70) and their US-based daughter Dr Rabia Ali Niazee - were flown to Los Angeles in the United States of America, as per the wishes of their family members.

According to unconfirmed reports, the body of another victim hailing from Hyderabad was handed over to his relatives at Madras. He was apparently working in a Madras-based company and was on his way to Los Angeles on the ill-fated Singapore Airlines flight.

Thirty-year-old software engineer Koppaga Somasekhara Vara Prasad, who is based in the USA, had a miraculous escape.

Singapore Airlines had flown relatives of Indian passengers to Taipei on November 1 and 2 for identification of the bodies of the victims. They returned on November 5 and 6.

Relatives of the lone Indian survivor also visited him in Taipei.

The airlines has announced compensation of $400,000 to the next of kin of each victim.
