Army's revenge strike gets it into trouble

A controversy has erupted over the army's claim of having eliminated the perpetrators of the Chatti Singhpora massacre with some locals alleging that innocent lives have been sacrificed and Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah assuring a DGP-level inquiry into the matter.

The army had stated that five militants, involved in the massacre of 35 Sikhs at Chatti Singhpora last week, were killed at Pathribal in Chatergul Valley by security forces.

The issue was raised today in the assembly and Mohammed Yusuf Tarigami of the CPI-M demanded that the government come out with details. He also called for taking the locals into confidence before undertaking counter-insurgency operations.

Dr Farooq Abdullah said he had directed Director General of Police Gurbachan Jagat and Additional Director General of Police (CID) R K Tikku to inquire into the incident.

The chief minister said he would make a detailed statement in the assembly tomorrow.

Meanwhile, demonstrators in Anantnag demanded exhuming of the bodies for verification. A bandh was observed in Anantnag and the situation, sources said, was tense.
