Clinton's visit is a diplomatic success, says Advani

E-Mail this report to a friend

Union Home Minister L K Advani said Sunday that cross-border terrorism has led to the increased isolation of Pakistan in the world community.

''US President Bill Clinton's television address in Pakistan has amply proved this fact,'' he noted while talking to newspersons at the Raj Bhavan in Jammu after his visit to Chhati Singhpora.

About India's military preparations after the Kargil war, he said the government had launched a two-pronged strategy to combat escalated terrorism.

"We will deal with firm determination and create a world opinion against cross-border terrorism,'' he said.

He described the visit of President Clinton as a ''success of our diplomatic initiatives.''

Advani recalled that after the 1965 and 1971 wars, India did not have much support at the international level. But the Kargil war has ''shown our success at the ground as well as at the diplomatic level.''

In reply to a question, the home minister said the Jammu and Kashmir unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party had demanded the imposition of President's rule in the state. But he was not in favour of this extreme step.

''The Union as well as the state government are fighting terrorism with full determination. As such I see no reason for it. Otherwise also, the National Democratic Alliance government wants to resort to the imposition of President's rule as the last option,'' he said.
