Trouble-free start to Jharkhand bandh

The 12-hour Jharkhand bandh, jointly called by the Vam Janwadi Jharkhand Alag Rajya Sangharsh Samiti and the Jharkhand Vikas Party began Friday morning amid tight security.

The bandh has been called to press the Centre to call a special session of Parliament for passage of the Bihar State Re-organisation Bill 2000.

An objective behind calling the bandh was to protest against prime minister Atal Behari Vajpayee's visit to Ullihatu.

Vajpayee was scheduled to participate in the centenary celebration of Birsa Munda's martyrdom at Ullihatu, Birsa's native village, near Ranchi Friday. The programme was, however, cancelled for security reasons as sufficient space could not be located at Ullihatu for the safe landing of three helicopters.

As a precautionary measure, police personnel have been deployed at strategic points to pre-empt any disturbance during the bandh, senior superintendent of police Gupteshwar Pandey said.

Pandey said no untoward incident had been reported so far from anywhere.
