Charged with corruption, IAS officer
says he is ready to face probe

Bibhuti Mishra in Bhubaneswar

The IAS officer who has been called "the most corrupt officer" by 17 MLAs in a complaint to Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, today said he would resign if it was proved that he had made " even one rupee illegally."

Prashant K Nayak, an officer of the 1984 batch, is currently posted as an additional secretary in the Fisheries and Animal Resources Development Department.

The 17 MLAs have alleged that Nayak misappropriated a large sum when he was posted as a collector in Angul district and later when he was made special secretary to the former chief minister, Giridhar Gomang.

"These are all wild allegations. They have alleged that I made Rs 20 crore in my 16 years of service. If it is proved that I have made even one rupee illegally I will quit."

Asked whether he was considering filing a defamation suit, Nayak said he does not believe in joining issues with people who make baseless allegations.

"Anybody can allege anything. But let it be proved. I welcome any government action, including raids on my houses. I served as a special secretary to Giridhar Gomang, who everybody knows is aboveboard. So how can the most corrupt person be the special secretary to the most honest politician?" he asked.

Nayak believes the allegations are part of a vilification campaign. "They are targeting me because I was a special secretary to a Congress chief minister. As a bureaucrat, I have no political affiliations," he said.
