UK trust to adopt village in Orissa

A charitable trust in the United Kingdom has decided to adopt one of the villages either in Jajpur or Jagatsinghpur district, as part of its rehabilitation efforts in cyclone-hit eastern Indian state of Orissa.

Two members of the Guru Nanak Charitable Trust, Glasgow, accompanied by former union minister B S Ramoowalia on Tuesday met Chief Minister Hemanda Biswal and requested him to identify the villages.

Trust members Gurmeel Singh Dhami and Gurmeel Singh Dhillon said they have decided to build houses and a school-cum-cyclone shelter in the adopted village. For this, about Rs 2.6 million have been collected from Sikh industrialists and businessmen in Glasgow and an additional Rs 400,000 was expected to be raised in the coming days.

Ramoowalia said he would request the Shiromani Gurudwara Prabanadhak Committee to provide assistance to build the houses under 'food for work programme. He said though the Sikhs had rushed relief to assist the victims, it was not enough considering the severity of the cyclone.

He said SGPC president Jagir Kaur should shift her headquarters to Bhubaneswar for at least three months to monitor relief and reconstruction work in the state.
