Basu won't let BJP disrupt Water shooting in WB

E-Mail this report to a friend

West Bengal Chief Minister Jyoti Basu today said his government would take action against the Bharatiya Janata Party, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and the Bajrang Dal if they tried to prevent film director Deepa Mehta and her unit from shooting Water in the state.

''Police will deal firmly with them. If the BJP and the RSS try to disrupt the shooting in the state, we will counter them effectively,'' he told reporters in Calcutta on Tuesday.

Basu had earlier invited Mehta's unit to shoot in the state when actress Shabana Azmi had a telephonic conversation with him.

Deputy Chief Minister and Cultural Affairs Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee said his government would provide all help for the shooting of the film.

''We want them to come here and carry out the shooting. One of them is coming tomorrow to discuss the matter with us. They had already expressed their desire to shoot the film in the state,'' Bhattacharjee said.

''We don't want to go through the script. We believe in freedom of expression,'' he added.
