3 counter insurgents, cop
killed in ambush

In stepped up violence, militants late on Saturday afternoon gunned down three top pro-India militants and a cop at Sagam Kokernag in south Kashmir district of Anantnag.

Police sources in Srinagar said that a group of heavily armed militants ambushed a Maruti van near village Sagam Kokernag in south Kashmir killing three top counter insurgents and a policeman on the spot.

The militants, sources said, hurled grenades and opened indiscriminate fire from automatic weapons on the van. The driver of the van who received serious injuries was shifted to hospital in Anantnag. However, doctors later referred him to the SMHS hospital in Srinagar.

Immediately after the incident troops from adjoining areas reached the spot. The area was cordoned off and searches were mounted.

No one has yet owned responsibility for the killing.

In other incidents, militants gunned down a special police officer and a suspected informer in north Kashmir on Saturday.

Police said militants stopped a passenger bus near village Wader Handwara in north Kashmir and asked two passengers to alight.

The militants later opened fire on both killing Abdul Gafoor Qureshi, a suspected informer, on the spot while a prominent National Conference worker and village headman Abdul Rashid Mir was seriously wounded. He was immediately rushed to the hospital. His condition is stated to be critical.

Militants on Friday night abducted Mehraj-ud-Din Darzi, an SPO from village Watergam in northern Baramulla district. His body was recovered by the police from Behrampora near Sopore.

Army shot dead a militant near Tangmarg in Baramulla district on Friday night. One AK-47 rifle and ammunition was recovered from the spot.
