Militants target security forces, injure seven

Mukhtar Ahmad in Srinagar

At least 23 persons, including seven security personnel, were seriously wounded in two powerful bomb explosions in Jammu and Kashmir, on the 13th day of the unilateral Ramadan ceasefire announced by the prime minister.

Police said a powerful cycle blast at Qamarwari in Srinagar on Monday afternoon resulted in serious injuries to five Border Security Force jawans. Four civilians also received injuries in the massive explosion.

Two vehicles of the BSF were also damaged in the blast.

Police sources said militants had tied an improvised explosive device to a cycle that was parked on the road. As two BSF vehicles passed by, the IED was detonated.

Police and BSF reinforcements rushed to the area immediately and shifted the injured to hospital. The area was searched by the troops.

Security has been beefed up in the area following the incident.

Militants also lobbed a powerful hand grenade on a Central Reserve Police Force vehicle in the main market at Chadoora in central Budgam district on Monday afternoon resulting in injuries to two jawans and a dozen civilians.

Police rushed to the spot and encircled the area. The injured were rushed to the hospital.

Late on Sunday night, militants bombed a newly constructed bridge. However, no damage was caused. Police guards fired in retaliation. Chief Minister Dr Farooq Abdullah inaugurated the bridge on Monday afternoon.

Unidentified militants fired a rocket towards the house of a special police officer at village Lalpora in northern Kupwara district resulting in the on-the-spot death of the SPO, identified as Abdul Qadoos. His wife and daughter were injured in the attack.

Another SPO Mohammad Sadiq was shot dead by militants at village Gali Nar Mandi in Poonch district late on Sunday.

Militants shot at and seriously injured a suspected police informer Pavaiz Ahmad at Kakkar Hamam in northern Baramulla district late on Sunday.

He was rushed to hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
