Dara Singh's trial adjourned

The much-awaited trial hearing in the Graham Staines murder case in Bhubaneswar was on Friday adjourned till January 1, 2001.

The Central Bureau of Investigation-designated court in Bhubaneswar was supposed to hear the final arguments in the case for a week from December 1, 2000.

Dara Singh is the main accused in the murder of Australian missionary Graham Stuart Staines and his two minor sons Philip and Timothy at Manoharpur village in Keonjhar district of Orissa in January 1999.

Dara Singh was lodged in Baripada jail in Mayurbhanj district after being arrested on January 31 this year.

Sources said the court adjourned the case after the defence lawyer urged that he be given at least a month's time to collect evidence in favour of his client.

The Mayurbhanj police had produced Dara Singh in the CBI designated court amid tight security. Dara Singh is expected to be taken back to Baripada jail on Friday itself.

Earlier, the same court has pronounced a life imprisonment for 13-year-old Chenchu for his role in the incident. Chenchu has appealed to the President for amnesty.

Dara Singh's lawyer Bana Behary Mohanty told rediff.com that as CBI has filed an additional report in the Staines' murder case, the defence has requested for more time to go through the report.
