Trishul missile successfully test-fired

Trishul, India's most sophisticated short range surface-to-air missile, was successfully test-fired from Chandipur-on-sea about 15 km from Balasore in Orissa on Friday.

Defence sources said the missile, with a range of 50 km, was test-fired at 17.05 hours IST.

Trishul, a deadly weapon against aircraft and ships, is specially designed for sea-skimming exercises for the navy. The missile uses a radar line of sight guidance and is powered by a two-stage solid propellant system.

Quick reaction and delivery, difficulty to jam microwave frequencies and high manoeuverability capability make Trishul a versatile and a state-of-the-art missile system in this class.

It is one of five missiles under various stages of development by the Defence Research Development Organisation. It is part of the integrated guided missile development programme that began in 1983.

Trishul has a triple role for three wings of the Indian defence -- army, navy and air force.
