Explosions claim 6 BSF jawans, injure 45
Mukhtar Ahmad in Srinagar
Six jawans of the Border Security Force were killed and 46 wounded, eight of them seriously in two massive explosions at Kud on the Jammu- Srinagar national highway on Sunday. It was a day of fast developments as militants struck at several places in the valley.
Early on Sunday morning, a bus carrying BSF jawans from Jammu to Baramulla hit a powerful improvised explosive device at Kud on the Jammu-Srinagar national highway. Five jawans died on the spot while 39 others were injured. The explosion was a very powerful one that shook the surrounding area.
The injured jawans were shifted to a nearby hospital while some of the critically wounded ones were later taken to the army hospital at Udhampur. Senior officers rushed to the spot. Authorities ordered a search along the entire stretch from Nagrota in Jammu to Qazigund in Kashmir.
Despite this, another massive bomb exploded at Kud resulting in the death of another jawan and injuries to six others. The injured have been shifted to the hospital in Udhampur. The Jammu range police chief R V Raju later reviewed the situation with senior officers.
A powerful bomb explosion at Kokernag in south Kashmir resulted in serious injuries to an Indo-Tibetan Border Police jawan. Bombs exploded in Nishat Garden, Boulvard Road and Sangrama in Baramulla district. However, no casualty was reported from these places.
Authorities have tightened security in the entire valley in view of the strike call given by the separatist All Parties Hurriyat Conference on Independence Day.
Special security arrangements have been made around Srinagar's Bakshi stadium where the Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah will unfurl the national flag. Security around vital installations has also been further tightened.
