Barely hours after the devastating bomb attack in Srinagar, which claimed 12 lives, militants ambushed a Border Security Force patrol party in Jammu region, killing three and seriously injuring two others, official sources said in Srinagar on Friday.

The sources said the BSF party was on a routine patrol on Thursday night when it came under attack at Kanitar Nallah of Poonch district. BSF troops returned the fire. In the exchange of fire, which lasted several hours, three jawans lost their lives and two received serious injuries, the sources said.

The militants managed to escape under the cover of darkness, they said.

Meanwhile, in another encounter in Kathua district in Jammu region, three militants and a Village Defence Committee member were killed at village Chawara-Ramkote in Billawar area on Thursday night, an official spokesman said.

The encounter began on Wednesday, when security forces assisted by VDC members raided a suspected militant hideout in the area, the spokesman said.

He said a large quantity of arms and ammunition was recovered from the slain militants believed to be foreign mercenaries associated with the Lashker-e-Tayiba.
