Enforcement Directorate arrests Kishen Kumar

The Enforcement Directorate has arrested actor-businessman Kishen Kumar, one of the prime suspects in the match-fixing scandal, on charges of violating provisions of the Foreign Exchange Regulation Act for certain transactions. He has been sent to judicial custody for 14 days.

Kishen Kumar was arrested by the directorate last night and produced before a specially constituted court today. Metropolitan Magistrate Swarnlata Mehra went to the Apollo Hospital and held court in a room there.

Kishen Kumar is undergoing treatment at the Apollo Hospital for a heart ailment. Mehra remanded him to judicial custody for 14 days and directed the Enforcement Directorate to produce him before her again on April 29.

The directorate also sought the constitution of a panel of doctors of the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences to assess the nature of Kumar's illness. It urged the judge to order that he be shifted to the AIIMS. But Mehra deferred the matter to April 17 for hearing by an assistant metropolitan magistrate.

The doctor attending on Kishen Kumar at the Apollo has been directed to produce a medical report on his condition on Monday.

Kumar's arrest under sections 8 and 9 of FERA comes after the Delhi police failed to interrogate him for his alleged involvement in the match-fixing case. The police tried thrice to interrogate Kishen Kumar in a NOIDA nursing home, but were unsuccessful as his doctors certified him medically unfit.

ED counsel Subhash Bansal said Kishen Kumar has been found to have been involved in transacting money through illegal [havala] channels in violation of the provisions of FERA.

The failed actor was admitted to the intensive care unit of Apollo Hospital's cardiology department yesterday after he complained of chest pain on being discharged from Kailash Hospital.

Meanwhile, Rajesh Kalra, another key accused in the case, was produced before Magistrate Mehra, who extended his remand with the ED by one day.

Bansal had sought a three-day remand on the ground that Kalra has to be confronted with certain documents that have been recovered from Chawla's residence. The magistrate noted that he had been treated well in custody, but said he must be produced again tomorrow at 1530 IST.
