Gamang demands probe into Netaji's disappearance

Orissa Chief Minister Giridhar Gamang has demanded a thorough probe into the mysterious disappearance of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose.

Speaking at a civic reception held at Janakinath Bhavan, the ancestral home and birthplace of Netaji in Cuttack, yesterday, Gamang said he would write to the Centre on the issue as he felt that the controversy surrounding Netaji's death should be resolved.

He hoped that the probe would unearth the real truth behind the leader's sudden disappearance in 1946.

On the state government's proposal to convert the birthplace of Netaji into a national monument and build a multistoried hospital within its precincts, Gamang said he would talk to the central leaders soon to get its seal of approval for the ambitious project.

Paying rich tributes to Netaji for his sacrifice for the independence of the nation, Gamang said Orissa feels proud of the celebrated hero who was born and brought up in the state and had his schooling there before leaving for Calcutta for higher studies.

The chief minister, who is also president of the Netaji Seva Sadan Trust Board which is currently maintaining the Bhavan, went a round the building and room number 23 in which Netaji was born on January 23, 1897.
