Mukhtar Ahmad in Srinagar

Union Home Minister Lal Kishenchand Advani is visiting Kargil on Wednesday for an on-the-spot assessment of the situation.

Sources said Advani would fly to Kargil immediately after his arrival in Srinagar on Wednesday morning.

He would meet the army commanders in Kargil and review the situation.

He would also meet the locals of Kargil who have taken refuge in the adjoining 'safe' areas.

This is Advani's first visit to the valley after the Kargil conflict broke out.

He would also visit the army hospitals at Udhampur and Srinagar.

He would also review the situation in Jammu and Kashmir with Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah and senior state officials.
