Sharief calls Vajpayee

Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharief has made a telephone call to his Indian counterpart Atal Bihari Vajpayee in an effort to prevent south Asia from 'descending into chaos and conflagration,' according to a foreign ministry statement.

Sharief made the call to Vajpayee after hearing his Foreign Minister Sartaj Aziz's version of the deadlocked peace talks, the statement said.

According to the statement, Sharief said, ''It is incumbent on the leadership to avert any further aggravation which will be detrimental to the economic development efforts of both countries.''

It did not appear from the statement that anything was said during the telephone conversation between the two leaders that would break the stalemate.
