Gen Malik visits forward posts in Kargil

E-Mail this report to a friend

As verification continued today to see if the Pakistani intruders had left Mushkoh valley, chief of army staff Gen V P Malik visited several areas of Kargil sector and held operational discussions with army commanders.

An army spokesman in New Delhi said Indian troops were still carrying out verification in Mushkoh valley. The progress of the troops, who were moving forward to occupy dominating heights, had been slowed down by bad weather. The going was also slow and deliberate, because of anti-personnel mines.

Meanwhile, Gen Malik made his first visit to the forward locations after the eviction of Pakistani soldiers. He visited Batalik and then addressed troops at Ganasok, 12 km away. The army chief congratulated the troops for the excellent job they had done. Gen Malik then spent more than half an hour at point 4875 and spoke to jawans of 13 Jammu and Kashmir Rifles. He had an aerial survey of Mushkoh Valley, Jubar, Kukarthang and Khalubar. Before leaving Srinagar for New Delhi, Gen Malik held discussions on operational matters with GoC, 15 Corps Lt Gen Kishan Pal and Lt Gen Avtar Singh, director general of Rashtriya Rifles.
