E-Mail this report to a friend

Four persons, including two militants and a security force jawan, were killed and two village defence committee members were abducted in the Kashmir valley in the last 24 hours.

An official spokesman said security forces killed a self-styled battalion commander, Khazir Mohammad Ganai alias Arif, in an encounter at Tekipora in the frontier district of Kupwara last evening.

A Kalashnikov rifle and three rounds were seized from him.

Another terrorist and the jawan were killed in another encounter between the terrorists and a joint search party of security forces and the Special Operations Group of the state police at Village Dara Sangla last evening. Two jawans were injured.

A Kalashnikov rifle, four magazines, one pistol, a wireless set and 100 rounds of ammunition were seized from the slain terrorist.

The spokesman said terrorists hurled a hand grenade on security force personnel at the Anantnag bus stand last evening. But the grenade missed its target and exploded on the roadside, injuring seven persons.

The body of a man, Manzoor Ahmad Lone, was recovered from Gangbugh Bund last evening, while two VDC members, Abdul Hamid and Abdul Jabbar, were abducted by terrorists from Village Damni last night.

A blast in a Maruti car in the high-security Batwara late last night destroyed the vehicle, but no one was hurt.
